storytelling and gaming

Types of games:

Strategy - like simulations, these attempt to capture a sense of realism, they are mainly turn-based as opposed to real-time - i.e. worms, Pokémon

Sport - these simulate the playing of sports but with management elements beyond the game itself - i.e. FIFA

Fighting - these tend to be head to head fighting games - mortal kombat, street fighter

Adventure - this tends to emphasise on physical challenged using hand-eye coordination and reaction time - i.e. Indiana Jones

Puzzle - i.e. Tetris, sudoku

Dance/rhythm -these have timed elements synced to music, many require a specialised controller - i.e rhythm paradise, just dance

Survival horror i.e. cod zombies, rage

FPS (First person shooter) - these are a sub-genre to shooter but these are real-time fast-paced action games. The majority can be played via modem and LAN in order to play multiplayer which has become standard to this genre  - i.e. Doom, Halo, Call of Duty, time splitters

Shooter - oldest genre of video games where the user has to blow away enemies in order to survive and continue the game - i.e. space invaders

Simulation - these attempt to re-create an experience - i.e. SimCity, flight simulator

Racing - basically a simulator allowing you to break the rules, some non realistic aspects - i.e. need for speed, Mario kart

RPG (Role playing games) - these tend to have a specific quest, process for evolving a character through experience; and acquisition and management of inventory items. - i.e. world of Warcraft

Platform - these are identified by navigating environments that require timing and jumping in order to reach a destination while disposing and/or avoiding enemies - i.e. Mario, crash bandicoot

Not all games stick to one genre, there are many hybrid games.

Games I played:

Crash bandicoot - a platformer game - Nintendo DS version and PS4

Lego batman - action -DS

Worms - strategy - DS

Need for speed - racing - PS4

What I have noticed in these games is that they all need a story to keep the user entertained and gives them a purpose/goal. In most games the characters need to collect some kind of object/money.

Myers Briggs personality test:
my results said I am a 'Consul ESFJ'. A factor of this personality type is that I like to help others. This suggest that I would work well in a team. Others are having a strong sense of duty, good at connecting with others, loyal and strong practical skills.

Weaknesses include being sensitive to criticism and being too needy because they want to be valued.

"Purely analytical careers are often too dull for Consuls though - they need human interaction and emotional feedback to be truly satisfied in their line of work"

"With clearly defined responsibilities and a sense of purpose, Consuls are patient, efficient, hard-working people who respect the authority of their managers"
